Program Description
We have created a very unique program in that the Exact-Med/UTTC Transcription Program offers an online, open enrollment, competency based type of program. Our program is designed to be completed online in approximately 12 to 15 months if student remains on schedule (dedicating approximately 15 to 20 hours per week). However, it is not uncommon for students to take longer to complete all of the requirements. Each student is unique and therefore, completion time will vary. As our program is competency based, students remain in the program until they have achieved the industry standards of 98% accuracy. We begin a group of students each month. The classes tend to be small (typically 7 to 10 students) and this has proven to be very successful in building relationships with our students which carry over into employment.
LENGTH OF PROGRAM:
Our competency based program is designed to be completed in approximately 12 to 15. Student is expected to train approximately 15 to 20 hours per week. Completion time will vary depending upon each student’s abilities. Medical transcription is competency based, so each student will advance differently.PHASE 1: (17 weeks)
Anatomy/Physiology: “Structure and Function of the Body”
Students will begin the training program with a comprehensive introduction to Anatomy/Physiology, which will focus on the body systems, their importance and function, and apply the text to everyday situations to which every student will be able to relate. The text is written at the appropriate level to stimulate critical thinking to those who are entering the medical field, whether it is in nursing or in any other health-related program. We feel that medical transcriptionists need to be fully prepared for all medical situations; so therefore, we want our transcriptionists to receive the same foundation as those who will be entering the nursing field. Testing is done periodically throughout this course. The student will follow guidelines of a syllabus.
English for Medical Transcription Careers: “Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation”
A medical transcriptionist is expected to be proficient in the use of the English language as well as the medical language. Grammar and punctuation play a huge part in keeping the context of a medical report correct, so therefore, our students are expected to learn the rules of written language and thus apply them in their daily life. Our textbook/workbook is designed to give the student practice in applying the skills they have learned. Students will follow guidelines of a syllabus.
Medical Terminology: “Language of Medicine”
Upon completion of the Anatomy/Physiology, the student will begin the Medical Terminology portion of the training. In learning the medical language, the student will be able to effectively interact in the medical workplace, have the foundation to understand the context of the medical language and be able to apply it to their responsibility as a medical transcriptionist. Medical Terminology is a very challenging but interesting course. We find that our students enjoy the challenge and are very well equipped for the next phase of their training, which is the medical transcription portion. Testing is done periodically throughout this course. Students will follow guidelines of a syllabus.
PHASE 2: (estimated between 12 to 20 weeks)
Fundamentals of Medical Transcription and Beginning Medical Transcription Integrated with Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Medicolegal Issues: This course is designed to expand upon the knowledge gained in Anatomy/Physiology, English and Medical Terminology by providing extensive hands-on medical transcription. This hands-on training implements all facets of medical transcription and is designed to offer real life experience in the field of medical transcription. This course offers the learner the experience of using medical transcription reference material as well as implements the standard guidelines set out by The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI). To reinforce learning, the content of this course is integrated with Pathophysiology for Healthcare Professions, Pharmacology and Medicolegal Issues. This course utilizes computer based learning opportunities as well as technology used in the field of medical transcription.
Phase 3: (estimated between 12 to 20 weeks)
Intermediate Medical Transcription Integrated with Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Medicolegal Issues: This course is designed to continue expanding upon the learners’ knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, English and Beginning Medical Transcription integrated with Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Medicolegal Issues by providing extensive hands-on medical transcription training supported by the study of Pathophysiology. This hands-on training implements all facets of medical transcription and is designed to offer real life experience in the field of medical transcription. This course offers the learner the experience of using medical transcription reference material as well as implementing the industry standard guidelines set by AHDI, as well as HIPAA compliance and Join Commission updates. By integrating this course with Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Medicolegal Issues the student will gain the overall knowledge needed to succeed in medical transcription. This course emphasizes acute care medical transcription and Pathophysiology. All medical specialties will be covered in this portion of the training with a focus on operative reports. This course utilizes computer based learning opportunities and technology used in the field of medical transcription.
Phase 4: (estimated between 12 to 20 weeks)
Advanced Medical Transcription Integrated with Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, and Medicolegal Issues: This course is designed to continue expanding upon the learners’ knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, English and Beginning and Intermediate Medical Transcription integrated with Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Medicolegal Issues by providing extensive hands-on medical transcription training supported by the study of Pathophysiology. This hands-on training implements all facets of medical transcription and is designed to offer real life experience in the field of medical transcription. This course offers the learner the experience of using medical transcription reference material as well as implementing the industry standard guidelines set by The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) as well as HIPAA compliance and Joint Commission updates. By integrating this course with Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Medicolegal Issues, the student will gain the overall knowledge needed to succeed in medical transcription. This course emphasizes acute care medical transcription and Pathophysiology. All medical specialties will be covered in this portion of the training with a focus on operative reports. This course utilizes computer based learning opportunities and technology used in the field of medical transcription.
Our Medical Transcription Program is designed to give students overall exposure to many different medical specialties. We have designed it to offer real-life experience in the field of medical transcription. Students will utilize medical transcription reference material as well as software utilized within the industry.
Students are mentored throughout the entire process of medical transcription. We train according to The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) style guidelines. Instructors will direct students to medical reference books as well as give feedback to each student individually. Through instructor comments we work with students on Medicolegal Issues, HIPAA regulations, confidentiality issues, Joint Commission updates and what will be expected of a medical transcriptionist in employment. We train our students on acute care dictation (hospital). A transcriptionist greatly increases their employability when they are able to transcribe the most difficult type of transcription such as acute care dictation. These include discharge summary reports, history and physical reports, consultation reports, operative procedures, clinical notes, emergency room notes; and ESL (English as a Second Language dictation). Medical specialties include orthopedics, cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, urology, genitourinary and amongst others.
