We have created a very unique program in that the Exact-Med/UTTC Transcription Program offers an online, open enrollment, competency based type of program. Our program is designed to be completed online in approximately 12 to 15 months if student remains on schedule (dedicating approximately 15 to 20 hours per week), however, it is not uncommon for students to take longer to complete all of the requirements. Each student is unique and therefore, the completion time will vary. As our program is competency based, students remain in the program until they have achieved the industry standards of 98% accuracy. We begin a new group of students each month. The classes tend to be small (typically 5 to 7 students) and this has proven to be very successful in building relationships with our students which carry over into employment.
PHASE 1:
CE 501: Anatomy/Physiology: “Structure and Function of the Body”
Students begin the training program with a comprehensive introduction to Anatomy/Physiology, which will focus on the body systems, their importance and function, and apply the text to everyday situations to which every student will be able to relate. The text is written at the appropriate level to stimulate critical thinking to those who are entering the medical field, whether in medical transcription or in any other health-related field. We feel that a medical transcriptionist needs to be fully prepared for all medical situations; so therefore, we want our transcriptionists to receive good foundation skills. Testing is done periodically throughout this course. Students will the guidelines of a course outline and syllabus.
CE 502: English for Medical Transcription Careers: “Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation”
A medical transcriptionist is expected to be proficient in the use of the English language, as well as the medical language. Grammar and punctuation play a huge part in keeping the context of a transcribed medical report correct. Our students are taught the rules and guidelines of the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) as well as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and how they impact the transcribed medical record. English for Transcription Careers also reviews the rules of written language. Our textbook/workbook and online classes are designed to give the student practice in applying these skills. Students will follow the guidelines of a course outline and syllabus.
CE 503: Medical Terminology: “Language of Medicine”
Upon completion of the Anatomy/Physiology, the student will begin the Medical Terminology portion of the training. In learning the medical language, the student will be able to effectively interact in the medical workplace, have the foundation to understand the context of the medical language and be able to apply it to their responsibility as a medical transcriptionist. Medical Terminology is a very challenging but interesting course. We find that our students enjoy the challenge and are very well equipped for the next phase of their training, which is the medical transcription portion. Testing is done periodically throughout this course. Students will follow the guidelines of a course outline syllabus.
PHASE 2:
CE 504: Beginning Medical Transcription Integrated with Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Medicolegal Issues:
This online course is designed to expand upon the knowledge gained in Anatomy/Physiology, English for Transcription Careers and Medical Terminology by providing extensive hands-on experience in medical transcription. This hands-on training implements all facets of medical transcription and is designed to offer real life experience in the field of medical transcription. This course offers the student the experience of using medical transcription reference material as well as implements the standard guidelines set out by The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI). To reinforce learning, the content of this course is integrated with Pathophysiology for Healthcare Professions, Pharmacology and Medicolegal Issues. This course utilizes computer based learning opportunities as well as technology used in the field of medical transcription.
Phase 3:
CE 505: Intermediate Medical Transcription Integrated with Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Medicolegal Issues:
This online course is designed to continue expanding upon the learners’ knowledge of Anatomy/Physiology, English for Transcription Careers, Medical Terminology, and Beginning Medical Transcription. Intermediate Medical Transcription provides extensive hands-on medical transcription supported by the study of Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Medicolegal Issues. This hands-on training implements all facets of medical transcription and is designed to offer real life experience. This course offers the learner the experience of using medical transcription reference material, technology used in the industry, as well as implementation of the industry standard guidelines as set by The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) as well as HIPAA compliance and JCAHO updates. By integrating this course with Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and Medicolegal Issues, the student will gain the overall medical knowledge needed to succeed in medical transcription. This course emphasizes acute care medical transcription (hospital level dictation to include foreign speaking physician dictation (ESL) as well detailed operative reports). Numerous medical specialties are covered in this portion of the training with a focus on operative reports. This course utilizes computer based learning opportunities and technology used in the field of medical transcription.
Phase 4:
CE 506: Advanced Medical Transcription Integrated with Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, and Medicolegal Issues:
This course is designed to continue expanding upon the learners’ knowledge of Anatomy/Physiology, English, Medical Terminology, and Beginning and Intermediate Medical Transcription. Advanced Medical Transcription gives the student a very in-depth experience which is true to life. Students transcribe and begin to incorporate word expansion software and other technology used in the industry. This final piece of transcription training gives the student the confidence needed to be able to enter the Medical Transcription industry at the acute care level. Most job opportunities are available to those who can transcribe the most difficult types of medical dictation and you will be well prepared for what the industry expects.
Our online Medical Transcription Program is designed to give students day to day skills needed to become successful in medical transcription. Students are mentored throughout the entire process of medical transcription. Our motto truly is “one by one” and the training is individualized to the student. With the use of medical transcription reference material, word expansion software, AHDI, HIPAA and JCAHO guidelines, our students are ready for employment.
A transcriptionist greatly increases their employability when they are able to transcribe the most difficult types of dictation such as acute care dictation. This includes hospital level dictation of discharge summary reports, history and physical reports, consultation reports, operative procedures, clinical notes and emergency room notes. Medical specialties include orthopedics, cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, urology, genitourinary and numerous other specialties.
As our program is competency based, students remain in the program until they have achieved the industry standards of 98% accuracy at which time Exact-Med/UTTC Transcription Program will assist in finding employment for our new trainees.
