Continuing Education

Continuing Education for medical transcriptionists consists of a Registered Medical Transcription (RMT) and a Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT).

CMT credentials are sought by employers as it shows the employer that a medical transcriptionist has advanced skills and is able to transcribe the more difficult types of medical dictation.  This includes acute care dictation which consists of ESL (English as a Second Language) as well as detailed operative reports.

Two years of transcription experience of acute care dictation is required in order to take the CMT certification examination. The CMT examination is a voluntary examination, however it is highly recommended to seek employment in the higher levels of the medical transcription industry. Employment opportunities are greatly increased when a transcriptionist is able to transcribe the more difficult levels of dictation. The CMT credentials prove that a transcriptionists has a these advanced skills.

The RMT examination (registered medical transcription) is also available and it is recommended that any newly trained medical transcriptionist entering the field take the RMT examination.  This has opened up another avenue for those who do not have the work experience required for the CMT examination.  The RMT examination also shows employers that you have passed the credentials set by AHDI (Associations for Healthcare Documentation Integrity) and will be a great asset to future employers.
